Smaller but better
Maxwell & Page are a small architectural design firm that is passionate about solving problems with optimism, honesty and care.
We're not volume-based; we're value-driven, crafting spaces that make your life more meaningful. We aim to create thoughtfully curated residential sanctuaries, inspiring commercial realms, and community-enhancing public spaces.
Our approach is simple yet profound – to encourage 'smaller but better.' We understand that the best liveable, functional and sustainable spaces comes through thoughtful design, not sheer scale. Whether it's envisioning your dream home or breathing life into commercial ventures, we excel in architectural design, concept development, and more.
Our Team
Eddie & Jess both studied at the University of Newcastle and then the pair worked as graduates together at the same award winning office with a focus on large scale public projects.
After going their separate ways they started Maxwell & Page Architects as a means to provide a bespoke, thoughtful, considered and empathetic architecture service.
Starting families reinforced the opportunity to start a practice with the hope to give students and graduates meaningful experience and ethical work environments without having to leave Newcastle. While staying deliberately small this allows our team to bring in specialist team members to flex with the size of the projects that come across our desks.

Eddie is an unbridled ball of energy, a trait his toddler daughter seems to have inherited. He organises the day to day running of the practice and is the first person you will talk to when you give us a bell. He enjoys the technical aspects of architecture and ensuring that buildings go together soundly.
He is currently co-chair of the NSW Australian Institute of Architects Small Practice Committee which seeks to assist small practices all over the state do better architecture.
His young family are foodies who enjoy cooking spicy food and traveling for an exotic meal (although his daughter currently prefers weetbix). If you’re in for a meeting and after a good lunch after, ask Eddie where to find it.
Fave architect easily Jorn Utzon.

Jess brings a contemplative calmness to our little studio. She is also quite the wizard when it comes to conveying ideas on paper – you may have seen some of her beautiful drawings over at Flo & Mil.
Jess is passionate about crafting spaces that have a strong connection to a clients brief. For her its all about ensuring the spaces we design improve the lives of those that inhabit them.
Her young family enjoys riding bikes and spending time outdoors, three blonde cherubs included. If you’re in for a meeting and after a good coffee, ask Jess where to find it.
If you pressed Jess on her fave architect she’d have to suggest Alvar Aalto.
Our process is all about you!
Most clients come to us with a clear destination in mind, our role is to help you get there while providing a rich, educational and meaningful experience for you along the way.
This begins with us actively getting to know you - not just your hopes and dreams for your project but the way you’d like to live, values you hold dear and the moments that make your heart soar. While a detailed questionnaire gets the conversation started, we will be continuously chatting and listening intently as you further distill your brief in the weeks and months ahead.
Protecting your financial wellbeing is important to us so before we start designing we try to provide some clarity around whether the brief you have provided is meeting your aspirational budget. We call this our pre-design phase. Feedback from our clients indicates the importance of this step:
‘Thanks for your time yesterday afternoon. We really like the way you address budget up front. Having some years ago dealt with another architect who really didn't seem to consider it at all (which was why they got the flick!) we appreciate this focus on being realistic and planning a project that is respectful of the fact that we have to finance it somehow!’ - Yvette Staton
Once we have an alignment of brief and budget we undertake a detailed analysis of your site to help us find the ideal way to realise your brief on your site. We call this a concept design. On presentation of this concept you will have enough of an understanding of the realistic potential for your project.
The development of your design is an iterative process covering a number of stages or steps that takes your beloved concept, through planning approval, through detailed resolution and through construction to a living, breathing building.
We cover this whole process in a clear roadmap that can be found in our Process Pack.
